Patron – Hon. Dame Tariana Turia

Hon. Dame Tariana Turia is a New Zealand politician. She gained considerable prominence during the foreshore and seabed controversy, and eventually broke with her party as a result. She resigned from parliament, and successfully contested a by-election in her former electorate as a candidate of the newly formed Māori Party. She retired from Parliament in 2014.

Mrs Turia is married to George Turia. They have 4 children, 2 whāngai, 28 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.tariana-turia 2

During Mrs Turia’s time in Parliament she has held numerous important and high level positions, including Minister for Disability Issues, Minister Responsible for Whanau Ora, Associate Minister of Health, Associate Minister for Social Development, Associate Minister of Housing, Associate Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment as well as of course, Co-Leader of the Maori Party with the Honourable Pita Sharples.

Mrs Turia had weightloss surgery in late 2009, and has tirelessly fought to increase Governments level of funding for Bariatric Surgery from the ‘inside’. Mrs Turia was successful in this and the WLS community within New Zealand has seen a steady, increase in funding for this type of procedure since.

On 23 October 2014 Mrs Turia kindly agreed to become the WeightLoss Surgery New Zealand Trust’s Patron, the Trusts first Patron and the best person the Trust believe for the role.

Mrs Tariana Turia topped the list of politicians in the New Year Honours, becoming a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
